I cannot pinpoint the exact day Kelly and I met. At a mutual friends’ house? or at a wedding? But I know where we connected. CANUSA. The first summer my daughter played basketball in the CANUSA Games Kelly and I chatted during practice times. Then she asked me to coach a team, next I was helping her with collecting registrations. Before I knew it I was her assistant coordinator; speed through many years and then she was my assistant. CANUSA Games connect athletes from all over Hamilton. Athletes that may play against each other at school but for 9 weeks practice and compete on the same Hamilton Basketball team. Kelly was always a positive influence for players of all levels even when we competed against the powerhouse Flint MI basketball athletes. She was an encouraging mentor for athletes and coaches and you felt special when she called you by a nickname: to her I was Shelala.
Although we are restaurant franchisees, I would say I am a professional volunteer. Being a part of CANUSA, Wearing of the Green Committee, Glanford Curling, Golf tournaments, and the Ancaster Fair allows me to give back to our community. Kelly was always a text, email, or call away when I needed assistance in any basketball related issue. But more importantly, she was my Tea Time buddy where we could bounce so many things off each other amongst the continuous laughter and of course her warm hugs!!
I am honoured to be part of The KDMFoundation because Kelly would love that we are assisting athletes in our community. She would think this is just awesome. When Kelly passed away, my immediate family realized how much the Dunham’s are a part of our lives because Dougie, Mitchell, and Ally are more than friends they are family.
