I started at Mohawk College as a Recreation Leadership student in September 1991. Growing up playing fastball I was excited to try out for the varsity softball team and to meet new people. It was here that I met Kelly Dunham, who unbeknownst to me would become a lifelong friend.
Kelly and I were both Recreation Leadership students and varsity fastball players. One of my first memories of Kelly was driving with her to one of our games in Hamilton. Beaker, Kelly’s car got us to the game. The music was blaring as we sped down the Garth Street hill like we were in the Indy 500. As I sat in the passenger seat, I had my “break” on the entire way down the hill. Kelly just laughed and continued to sing along to the music. From that moment on I knew Kelly was a person who lived in the moment, lived life to the fullest and loved to laugh and have a good time.
I had the privilege of working with Kelly for over 17 years at Mohawk College in various capacities. The most fulfilling was our time together in Alumni Relations. It is here where I witnessed Kelly’s passion for people and helping others. She mentored students, supported her colleagues, coached athletes, built relationships with graduates and kept people connected. She juggled her busy work and volunteer life all while being an amazing mom and wife. Kelly’s family meant the world to her.
I am blessed to have had Kelly in my life and am thankful for our 30+ years of friendship. I am honoured to be a part of the inaugural Board of Directors of the Kelly Dunham Memorial Foundation where we will keep Kelly’s legacy alive of supporting youth to achieve their dreams.
